Recently there was an online mini seminar about the newest discoveries in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in general. I collected 9 hours worth of notes for my own reference and to share with all of you. Now I’m sharing my notes so you can find your way into the leading Alzheimer’s protocols as presented by some of our most skilled physicians in alternative medicine.
This link was provided by the seminar to answer questions and find resources. www.apoe4.info
Leading doctors in the field were interviewed. I’ve also included some of their youtube videos and if you search youtube you will find that most of them have more than one video. The doctors have also written books on the topic that you will find if you do a search.
THIS IS HUGE! Researchers recently discovered that they could give young, healthy animals Alzheimer’s disease by transferring the gut microbiome of human subjects with Alzheimer’s into germ-free rats. https://www.thelibertybeacon.com/breakthrough-study-infects-animals-with-human-alzheimers-through-microbiome/
Dr. Dale Bredesen
wrote the book called ‘Reversing Alzheimer’s and he has sorted out three different types of Alzheimer’s disease. Although just one type may be the leading cause or any specific individual he says that it is possible to be affected by two or all three types of Alzheimer’s. The more types one has the more complex the treatment will be.
Several hundred people have done his protocol based on genetics and exposures..
He obtained unprecedented results in reversal of Alzheimer’s symptoms.
Ultimately he came to the conclusion that there are 3 causes of Alzheimer’s disease.
Type 1 Alzheimer’s (inflammatory) with the general age of onset in the 60’s
He found that Amyloid plaque is not necessarily bad and it is found in people who do not have cognitive decline. It has antimicrobial protective properties and will bind metals that are bad for the brain. It is also a response to trophic decline. It can be protective to the brain. The situation complicates when inflammation is present.
The cause is: Inflammation, trans fats and chronic pathogens.
Pathogens may include but are not limited to: Herpes, Lyme, fungi, bacteria, mold that may be residing at low levels in the body or may be also be causing severe chronic symptoms.
The Diagnosis is based on an inflammatory profile including high C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor alpha, multiple auto antibodies, Interluekin 6 (is an interleukin that acts as both a pro-inflammatory cytokine and an anti-inflammatory myokine. In humans, it is encoded by the IL6 gene)
A classic example of someone with Type 1 Alzheimer’s is: Senior moments, difficulty remembering appointments, both parents had it (genetic predisposition) … he had an amyloid pet scan and a FDG pet scan, HSCRP test (high sensitivity C-reactive protein) should be less than 1.0, but he had 10 times the upper limits of what you should have. After 3 months of the program he clearly improved and now 3 years out doing very well. At times when he’s gone off the program he’s done less well. In his case his diet was the cause of inflammation.
The program is not a targeted one, but buckshot. The diet must be greatly improved including the elimination of all processed food, SAD diet (Sad American Diet), GMO food, all pro-Alzheimer’s diet foods must go.
Cog-oscopy at age 45 test to see if you have pathogens, inflammation, genetic predisposition. (I could not find a definition of a cog-oscopy but its probably discussed in his book)
Amyloid plaque is a generalized response by the immune system.
Type 2 Alzheimer’s (atrophic) has its general onset in the 70’s.
This type is basically caused by the natural withdrawal or decline of trophic supporting hormones such as estradiol, testosterone, DHEA, nerve growth factor, brain derived neuro- trophic factor, D3, B12, thyroid hormones…. You have to have the right things coming in once the body has stopped producing them.
Trophic means life supporting - supporting the function of cells or networks
The cause of Type 2 is Menopause, hypothyroid, D deficient, hysterectomy with oophorectomy for women and for men Andropause, which is the natural decline of Testosterone and DHEA in men.
Tell tale signs of Type 2 Alzheimer’s is: can’t store new memories and brain fog
If hormonal support is decreased the network for normal brain function starts to go down. Short term memory goes down first generally and may start in peri-menapausal years for women.
Hormone and vitamin supplementation is the answer.
Example: terrible memory, forgets everything.. had a test and was at 9% …. Now after program at 95%... was low in all her hormones.
You need to remove the cause of the amyloid plaque before you remove the plaque.
I researched further for the treatment of men and my nurse practitioner who does bio-identical hormone replacement told me that she has had good results for men. For men supplementation with Testosterone is the answer and there are bio-identical compounded products available. It can be applied with a cream or for the not so compliant male and small implant can be done.
Type 3 (toxic form) starts in the 50’s.
Temporal and parietal lobes.. atrophy can be also seen throughout the brain.
May be similar to louie body disease. Much more impaired.
Problems with organizing… can’t follow directions, can’t pack a suitcase.
They have been exposed to specific toxins, mercury, myco-toxins like mold, Aspergillus which creates neurotoxins. High copper zinc ratios. Cortical abnormalities and may also have depression. Pet scans may be abnormal, spinal fluid may be abnormal.
Most common toxins are from biological molds.. Lyme disease (which may or may not cause inflammation), chemical toxins. Both inorganic or organic as from eating a lot of fish. DDT and other ag. Chemicals, Aluminum and other metals.
They have trouble planning, calculation, visual perception, finding words…. found in younger people, early 50’s. 500,000 Americans have it.
Some people may have mixed types of Alzheimers.
Genetic predispositions - apo-e4 positive marker.
Dr. Daniel Amen
People with early Alzheimer’s can reverse it even if there is a family history. You must be motivated and do the plan.
Your thinner, your happier, your energy is better when you do the plan.
How to change behavior… make a series of small changes over time
Think like this: Is what I’m going to do today good for my brain?
‘The bright minds program’ a phunonic (?) program to help memory
They may have a high ferritin. If you have high ferritin –donate blood a few times a year.
They will have a high crpk
low levels of omega 3 fatty acids
Eat fish a few times a week
Decrease bad fats
genetics – higher risk, not a death sentence but a wake up call
Green tea decreases beta amyloid plaque.
Head injury may be in the history.
With head trauma improvements can be made on the right program
Many people don't easily recall the head trauma that occurred, causing some of the more mild brain injuries (no visible symptoms) can lead to dimentia
The brain contains the hardware of your soul. The following glands if damaged will cause problems.
Hypocampus
Pineal
Pituatary gland
Frontal Lobes
Etc. etc.
RA (rheumatoid arthritis)
Asthma
Multiple Sclerosis
Lyme disease
Parasites from your pets
Have an infectious disease panel
all the above associated with memory issues
Herpes
Genital or coldsores
Covers 1/3 of population have herpes
You need to Boost your immune system
Gut health is a priority – probiotics, fermented foods (homemade)
Vitamin D3 optimal is between 50 and 100... closer to 100 is better.
Neuro hormone deficiency - measure progesterone, thyroid, testosterone. Not normal but optimal at high normal at 70 to 100 percent.
Thyroid antibodies needs to be tested
T= toxins
The real weapons of mass destruction are foods we eat.
Pesticide Laden, GMO high glycemic low fiber stored in plastics. Eliminate plastics from the kitchen.. (especially important for children)
B = blood flow
Dr. Breus
Improve your memory by improving your sleep.
Work with natural rhythms
Circadian rhythm … know which one you have there are 3 types
As you get older your rhythm changes and you want to go to bed earlier and get up earlier.
Reading is best in the morning when you get up to retain information
When you get up:
Hydrate first
Go outside and get some sunlight
Then nutrition which includes protein and now carbs.
Then do projects to use your brain on a project
The best time to be creative is later in the afternoon because your analytic shuts down and the intuitive kicks in.
Natural light is natural light 460 nanometers
Timing is essential to reset circadian rhythms
if you snooze in your brain still producing melatonin & it will make you groggy. Respect a consistent wake up time. Stick to it.
Stay up till at least 10 pm and you will sleep better but have low level lighting to facilitate the production of melatonin
Structure day for max mental alertness and focus
The morning is best
Cortisol is highest in am
Melatonin is higher in later day – not as analytical
40 to 55 minutes is normal attention span for focusing on project
Then rehydrate
walk outside and get some sunlight
deep breathing exercises
Diaphramic breathing re-centers you, refocuses you
have lunch now and this is when you eat most of your carbs
1-3 most people feel sleepy. Core body temp takes a dip which increases melatonin… so go outside and get light… light is medicine
it will stop the melatonin
Light is medicine
Air is medicine
Movement is medicine
Go outside and move 3 times a day.
Got Brain Fog?
Are you well hydrated?
Did you sleep well?
Are you moving your body?
Tai Chi is excellent exercise and older people can do it.. do it even if you are no good at it. It will serve you well
Have a lunch sized dinner and dinner sized lunch
Social interactions help keep the brain functioning. Be with people
Share a meal, movie or something to keep mind active but not stressful
No more than one drink at night.
No computers, TV or phone or laptop in evening.
The power down hour divided into 3 segments:
20 min. get the day’s ends tied up
2. 20 min. for hygiene and use a dimmer light in bathroom
3. 20 minutes for mediation, relaxation, prayer, fiction reading that calms, electronics off at 9pm.
Cortisol is the stress hormone. not good at night.. hard to get it out
Melatonin should be high in pm low in am
A phase response curve
Take melatonin 90 minutes before bed. It's a circadian rhythm regulator
People in pain don't sleep
Treat both at the same time.
Anti-inflammatories, melatonin
Herbs like valerian, skullcap, passionflower.
Dr. Pamela Wartian Smith
Find the cause and treat it.
Most memory loss is from inflammation.
and by hormonal imbalance
Testosterone = memory for men
Estrogen = memory for womwn
Pregnealone = is the memory hormone, the mother hormone makes all the hormones pluss DHEA and cortisol
Cortisol can be measured in a saliva test. If it is low bp, cholesterol, blood sugar goes up, thyroid may dysfunction, people put on weight,
Heavy metals
Rhodiola and Aswaganda to regulate cortisol if really stressed it takes 1 to 2 years to get it right.. meditation, yoga, breathing,
Pregnelone takes 90 days to get right.
There are insulin receptors in the brain so too much or too little insulin can affect memory
Mediteranean diet
Genetic testing and measure genomes and tailor a diet for it.
Genomic testing can determine diet and exercise for you.
Sprinter gene will help make you maintain your weight
Jack LaLane does not like exercise but he loves the results .. exercise maintains memory
1. how you eat 80/20 rule
2. exercise minimum exercise – one study shows advanced cardio for 20 minutes once a week is enough. Other studies 3x week.
3. Sleep.. you need good sleep 6.5 to 8 hours will drive up blood sugar and affect memory
4. Nutrients get you nutrients measured. Measure nutrients multivitamin probiotic omega 3 fatty acids.
Hearth health hardening of arteries = hardening in the brain too
Homocystine if it accumulates = heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, …. MTHF (methol tetra hydrofolate) OR TMG (TRIMETHOL GLYCINE) Homcysteine should be between 6 and 8.
Homocystine is a fasting blood level study
CRP – marker of inflammation you want it to be 1 or below .. and is the major risk factor for heart disease… and it will be impacting your brain.
Omega 3 fatty acids can bring it down 3000 mg. it will take about 30 days. Green tea 3 cups a day, curcumin,
If CRP is really high like 20 means there is an infection in the vessels so an antibiotic is given.
Fibrogeningen
Ferritin. If iron elevates it increases the risk of heart disease, more common in men but found in women too.
Calming herbs lemon balm, chamomile
Toxic exposures like heavy metals.
Urine test … you take a provocative chelating agent. ..you must take a vitamin for 30 days before
Toxic metals plays a role in diabetes. Chelate them out. IV if its high or or oral chelation
Type 1
Type 2
Type 3 – Alzheimer’s disease diabetes of the brain. .. may be caused by metals. Blood sugar elevation is related to toxic metal exposure.
Measure pcbs, dioxins, phalates … infrared sauna will detox it. 3 x week. Risk free except don't jump into cold water afterwards
Diagnosis is determined by diagnosis of exclusion.
Lyme disease
Parasitic infection
Dr. Mary Newport
Dr. Newport's husband developed Alzheimer’s disease. She tried giving him the supplement of coconut oil and had amazing results with continual improvement over several years. She figured out that ketones for brain fuel instead of glucose to feed the cells would forestall Alzheimer’s. The film at the end of this section details her experience in helping him.
Coconut oil is a super fuel for the brain
And can reverse Alzheimer’s Disease
Medium chain fatty acids convert to ketones
Alzheimer’s patients have difficulty getting insulin into the cells of the brain
Ketones gives energy to brain cells and potentially can prevent Alzheimer’s.
Coconut oil can help memory on a short term basis, also.
With the regular use of MCT oil (medium chain triglycerides) oil improvement was noted in half of people who took it.
Insulin resistance is a precursor to Alzheimer’s.
Coconut oil converts MTCs to ketone bodies and cross the blood brain barrior and supply an alternative fuel to the brain. Coconut oil is about 60% MCTs and human breast mild is 10 to 17%.
Improvement can be overnight and improvements continued over 1 year.
Smoke point of coconut oil at 350 degrees, so don’t burn it.
Coconut water is similar to human plasma and will hydrate you well but it does not deliver what you need for Alzheimer’s
Coconut milk – the thick stuff can be used.
MCT oil, Now brand available at www.iherb.com , by the quart (which is extracted from coconut oil) is a medical food and can be use in salad dressing 2-3 tsp. combined with another salad with another dressing for flavor. (use coupon code BAR967 at iherb for discount)
Start with 2 tablespoons a day. If it upsets digestion start with 1 tsp. 3 x day with food… even start with ½ tsp if its upsets you then increase gradually. You will adjust to it.
Prevention 3-5 tablespoons a day with minor problems.
4-6 tablespoons a day or more if you can handle it if you have Alzheimer’s.
glucose and ketone pets cans… the cells are still there but they need energy and can only get it with ketones if they are insulin resistant.
Physical endurance can increase with the raising of ketones for both normal and abnormal mice in studies.
MCT oil is used by athletes (body builders) to create lean body mass. MCT is not stored as fat. Its used immediately for energy.
MTCs are saturated fat they are converted to ketones or burnt as energy and not stored as fat
If you have a cardiac issue and unsure have your doc do lipid panels to make sure you are in proper range
Your risk of developing dementia is increased if your are diabetic
Improved memory, cognition, mood, strength, socialization, improved sleep (maybe vivid dreams)…. Take MCT before sleep.
Book “The coconut oil & low carb solution for Alzheimer’s”. Parkinson’s and diabetes.
Get your diet carbs below 60 grams a day.
Contraindicated: Not for people with liver failure or rare enzyme defects, if you have cardiac issues have doc monitor your lipid levels.
It will definitely help with diabetes, Parkinon’s, Lou Gerigs disease (ALS) , MS, (Lyme)
Reducing sugar reduces inflammation
Drawing a clock is standard test for determining how advanced Alzheimer’s is. You can see the improvement over a 37 day course of coconut oil for Dr Newport’s husband, Steve. Some people will take longer to respond to coconut oil that others. Steve was a quick responder to coconut oil.
Dr. Joseph Maroon
- neuro-surgeon's book “Square One”
Day 08 | Overwhelmed, Overworked, and Overstressed: Preserving The Body & Mind Of The Caregiver With Dr. Joseph Maroon
Doctor for Pittsburg Steelers
He’s an iron man athlete
And nutritional expert
He knows head surgeries
What goes on in the brain of an Alzheimer’s caregivers
STRESS
Stress hormone of Cortisol destroys brain cells as well as other parts of the body.
Its the flight or fight hormone.
It contributes to depression, over whelmed, downward spiral
Brain is continually being besieged by cortisol including hypocampus is where memory happens.
Can create mood disorders, emotions out of control
It damages the area of the brain most affected by Alzheimer’s and therefore promotes it.
Mayo clinic study… burnout in physicians is 49% and 57% in neuro-surgery. .. mental exhaustion, de-personalization = loosing emotional contact with family and patients.. or they don't feel fulfilled in their work.
Suicide ideation 400 physicians committed suicide last year. 10% of medical students have suicide ideation.
Nurses and other care givers are subject to similar difficulties
Stress of mother can be transferred to babies intra utero …
Can supplements fortify against stress?
Inflammation is key to Alzheimer’s
Anti-inflammatory agents that the body makes
He takes:
Fish oil… ‘omax 3’ EPA/DHA
Nicotimide ribacide ‘NR’ - cromadex company – for mitochondrial support
NAD is a precursor to making APT – increases energy
D3 neuro and endotheal protection (lining of vessels)
Magnesium cellular support
Resveratrol – in grapes,
Probiotics to support immunity and gut health
Krill oil instead of fish if your vegan
Its not all in a pill..
Exercise
Caregivers get futility and depression
Exercise is the most effective antidepressant
Work up to 8 to 10,000 steps per day
Why does it work?
1. increases BDNF ‘Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor’ which creates new brain cells
2. increases connections between brain cells which aides memory…
3. increases neuro-plasticity
Dopamine increases, serotonin, and anandamide all neurotransmitters.. (the brains own marijuana..) endo-cannabinoid receptors.... we have our own indoginous anadamide is released (bliss)
Many antidepressants release BDNF
Better to exercise than take antidepressants
Which have side effects
We are built to build positive bio-chemicals to get us through stress
Square One… the 4 sides of the square. He broke down due to stress working in a truck stop. He had no insight of what he was doing that lead him into his stress situation. In a little book called William Danforth who started the Purina company he says “I dare you to lead a balanced life”. He wanted him to draw a square
Work
Family
On the side spiritual and on the other side physical
It a was a flat line, not a square
Exercise brings sleep
Alleviates depression
Brain gets literally rewired.
Started again to the spiritual underpinnings of his life
Reconnected with kids and family
Reconnecting the square.
Improve diet, exercise and brain will improve
Eliminated toxins of alcohol sugar.
Prayer for stress
Prayer before surgery calms patients and makes it easier for them
Nicoya in Costa Rica have more people living over 100 in the top 10
Divorce:
Criticism leads to divorce
Counter attack
To relieve anxiety we drink or do drugs, go out side of marriage
James Allen 1903 “as a man thinkith” so he or she shall be
We are turning our genes on or off by good or bad thoughts.
It’s called neuroplasticity by thought
50% OF WORK FORCE is fighting with stressful environment. But if you can be vocal in an appropriate fashion be vocal about the things that are disturbing. Modulate stress with adjunctive activity.. music, dance, art, swimming, ETC.
concussions and head injuries
evolution and care of the problem has happened
but now.. major problem is returning to activity before healing has completed. BDNF will kick in and BDFN does healing… cascading decline. Mild exercise is ok during head injury.
Sport concussions usually are not life threatening but they need time to heal … test called ‘Impact’… a neuro-cognitive test… return to sports not permitted until they return to their baseline.
Dr. Mercola and Dr. Maroon (Full Interview here)
Dr Norman Doidge
Nuero-plasticity
Non invasive influence of brain with light and sound
Get at the brain the natural way
Use energy,
Electrical signals are used in the brain…
Signaling can get irregular..
A noisy brain
Dead cells, unhealthy cells and healthy cells receiving junk data
Neuro feed back is used
1. address general cellular health light, hyperbaric oxygen detox, dietary intervention, leaky gut tx.
2. neuro stimulation (learned non use in stroke and parkinsons) find ways to stimulate that circuitry, sound, neuro feedback
3. Neuro relaxation sound light, electric stim on tongue to stimulate brain stem.. they sleep a lot… maybe for days… don't interrupt it
4. Re-pattern brain maps through movement … neuro-differentiation
How does light rewire our brain… all life and growth is dependent on the sun and is involved in the energy regulation. Cold laser lights can help healing. It can lower or cool down abnormal inflammation, eliminate pain,
In course of treatment field of vision expanded..
Light can help vision, migraine headaches, brain injury
And it influences the mitochondria to re-energize
Used for stroke and brain injury
LED lights at the right frequency can do it… but lasers go in deeper into the body, 8 to 10 cm.
Most people with brain problems need multiple approaches
Lights in general are very safe.
Mediteck in Toronto works with light
Anita Saltmarch study on head injury and light
Vielight in Toronto
Buy a light for home use
Many reasons sunlight is helpful
Court yards in hospitals have been eliminated
Used for TB and smallpox
With the development of antibiotics people have forgotten about the use of light
Sound intervention: autism and other learning disorders
Sounds often trouble autistic kids
Sound sensitivity is very important
You have an auditory zoom in your hearing (like a camera)
In autistic kids it may not be working well
They cover their ears to block the sound and to try to control their fear and discomfort
Cognitive exercises
Brain HQ … brain games
https://dynamicbrain.brainhq.com
for age related cognitive decline
fewer car accidents, better in managing everyday life
stimulate pathways.
For traumatic brain injuries after cellular detox and fortification is done
Cranial stimulation
Tongue stimulation goes directly to the brain stem.. one woman with coordination damage due to the use of an antibiotic… restored balance problems, stoke, Parkinson's, MS, people with Parkinson’s felt less ridged , mood improved. Coordination as well as balance improved…
Neuo feedback – EEG feeding signals into a computer interface
Retraining the brain for ADD
Add may have sleep brain waves
Calm focus gets a feedback signal.. boat surges forward… over time maybe 40 traiing sessions he will learn to shift himself into calm focus
Used in some epilepsy and learning disorders

Looks like the covid vaccines have accelerated inflammatory situations in many who took them.
AI(autoimmune ,including Type 3 diabetes, is off the charts world wide) is on the rise in every country that had the vaccines.
We have no idea yet how bad it really is as all is being silenced about the tidal wave that has hit the world population and it will get much worse I fear.
We have one copy of the APOE4 gene on my father's side.(30% increase factor in acquiring)
My father is borderline SCI/MCI and I had him on a 12 day gluten free, dairy free, low carb and low sugar diet and then he fell in assisted living and is currently in the hospital with closed head injury.
That's 12 days down the drain now.
The health care systemin the US is very similar to a prison caring for elderly parents in assisted living.
Once they enter the system, it's hard to overcome it and alter, because they(the caregivers) get the payday even with Medicare supplements.
I need to find a specialist here in Georgia to see if someone is trained in Dr. Breseden protocol.
I am most familiar with his work and have read both of his books.
Thanks for the other information.
The Mercola-Maroon interview was gone. Said YT acct deleted...
